What contemporary dance is

Contemporary dance is freer than ballet. It uses the weight of the body, the floor and the breath, with movement that goes from very slow to very fast. Instead of fixed positions, it asks each dancer to find their own way of moving and to tell an idea or an emotion with the body.

What classes work on

  • Floor work: going down, rolling and coming back up with control.
  • Strength and flexibility of the core, back and legs.
  • Improvisation: creating movement from a piece of music, an image or an idea.
  • Expression: using the body and the eyes to tell a story.
  • Group choreography, adapted to each age.

Contemporary dance or ballet?

Ballet gives technique, posture and discipline. Contemporary gives freedom, creativity and ease on the floor. They complete each other, and several students do both in the same year. It is also a good choice for anyone who loves dancing but does not feel at home with the formality of ballet.
